Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says Malaysians have yet to achieve true unity despite over six decades of independence as each race wants to maintain their own culture and heritage.

“We accept the fact that we cannot be a country where the people identify themselves as one race,” he said in his monthly assembly speech at the Prime Minister’s Department here.

“To that, we as political parties will ensure that all races take part in the administration so that everyone is represented in this country.”

He also urged civil servants to learn from and appreciate how Malaysia achieved independence from the British.

“We did not go to war for our independence, and we are lucky for that,” he said.

“Some of our people worked and trained during the British administration and were well versed in handling the country.”

Mahathir also assured that no one would be sidelined in terms of economic development.

“Many African countries and Myanmar chased away people who were not originally from those countries because they controlled the country’s economy,” he said.

“This does not happen here because everyone, regardless of where they are from, gets their citizenship and enjoys their rights as Malaysians.”
