Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Attorney-General Mohd Apandi Ali is among top government officers who will be vetted, and action will be taken against them if there is evidence of wrongdoing.
He said the AG might have undermined his own credibility by hiding evidence of wrongdoings in the case involving 1MDB.
The government will consult with lawyers on the matter, he added.
“If he has hidden evidence, that is a wrongdoing. That is wrong in law,” he said during a press conference after a close-door meeting today with other Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders.
He was asked by reporters whether the government will reopen investigations into the 1MDB case.
Mahathir said his government will act according to the laws of the country.
On the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), he said the government will study if the agency had been bias in carrying out its duties.
“If that is the case, we will have to change them (the top officers),” he said.
Mahathir warned the government will not recognise state governments formed through manipulation of votes if there is evidence.
For instance, he said, Parti Warisan Sabah had initially won 35 seats, but the Election Commission officers kept recounting the ballots in some constituencies until the party’s seats were reduced to 29.
“Now we a have a problem because there could be attempts to bribe to get certain people to cross over using money.
“We regard this as corruption,” he said.
He said the MACC seemed to have ignored the fact that corruption was rife.
“When we find evidence of corruption (in electoral contests), we may request that the election be invalidated,” he added.
Mahathir also said the redrawn constituency boundaries passed by the last parliament, and which critics claimed were gerrymandering at its worst, would be changed back to the original boundaries.
