(Actionline) Nurse mistakenly gives wrong info to patient

A NURSE at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur has mistakenly told a patient to consume reconstituted sinus relief liquid, which is not supposed to be ingested.

The patient’s mother, Jigna Doshi, said her daughter suffered abdominal pains and felt nauseated an hour after consuming a sachet of a sinus wash or irrigation designed to relieve congestion in the nasal passage.

“I admitted our daughter to seek treatment for her infected adenoids and tonsils.

“Shockingly, for a hospital in a cosmopolitan area, most of the nurses did not speak English. The day after admission, a nurse told my daughter to mix a sachet of powder with water and drink it.

“When my daughter complained of abdominal pains and nausea an hour later, another nurse said the powder was not meant to be ingested.

“It was supposed to be reconstituted and put into a bottle to irrigate her nasal passages.”

Jigna said although she had lodged a complaint with the hospital’s customer care department, the matter had yet to be addressed.

A hospital spokesman says the hospital has met the patient to resolve the issue.

The spokesman, however, declined to reveal more information out of respect for the patient’s privacy.

“We are unable to share details of this case due to patient confidentiality, but we have resolved the issue amicably,” the spokesman said.

Jigna said the hospital had called for a meeting to discuss the matter.

“They called for a meeting and the case was looked into. All parties were present.

“They apologised to us and promised to look into ways to improve their nurses training programme,” says Jigna.
