Students incensed by guard who calls them ‘keling’

Despite demanding he man-up and apologise for uttering the racial slur, the security guard stands his ground and refuses to apologise.

Malaysians are no strangers to being called every racial slur in the book but recent tensions between the races has meant that most mind their manners and make an effort to be politically correct, if nothing else.

Not so for a security guard of a polytechnic college in Shah Alam who thought nothing of calling a group of Indian students “keling” to their faces.

Insulted by the racial slur, the group confronted him and demanded he apologise to all of them, the entire altercation of which was caught on video and has since gone viral.

From the conversation, it is learned that another security guard had earlier given the students permission to enter the premises but that the second guard had come on the scene and feeling displeased at seeing the students there, called one of them “keling” in front of all his friends.

In the 2 minute 50 second video a representative of the students, repeatedly tells the security that all they want is an apology from him for calling them “keling”, after which they will go on their way.

The student says: “Abang tak respect kami langsung. Sekarang bang minta maaf, kami masuk. Senang saja. Minta maaf. Kami masuk.” (You showed no respect to us at all. Now just apologise and we will enter. It’s that easy. Apologise. We will enter.)

The guard however walks away, shaking his head while refusing to entertain their requests despite others in the group also coming forward to tell him that the issue at the heart of the matter was one of respect.

Another man, looking like a security personnel as well, helps mediate and tells the students that as much as they want respect from the security guard, they in turn must respect him.

The video ends abruptly at this point before any resolution was reached.
