Shahrizat and Zahid must drop sexual innuendoes

Why was the audience so entertained by the sexually-charged statements made by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Shahrizat Abdul Jalil?

The Home Minister and Wanita Umno Chief made indelicate remarks about papayas and bananas at the Permatang Pauh campaign kick-off, before reportedly “bursting into giggles”, says Zuraida Kamaruddin, Wanita PKR Chief.

Why did crowd join them and not stage a walk-out?

This is not a joke.

It is disgusting, shameful and does serious injustice to any sensible and civilised human being.

How can leaders use their political platform to make double entendres with sexual implications?

If what is being reported by several online portals is indeed true, then the people, other Umno leaders and civil society leaders must object vehemently.

We cannot continue to put up and be thrilled by such filthy mindsets of leaders.

Educationists, religious spokespeople and thought leaders in ethics and integrity must speak up.

The words uttered by Zahid and Shahrizat are so grossly indecent that even to repeat them would be a disgrace. Is this leadership?

Is this what their political prowess amounts to at the end of the day?

Such individuals must account for such unacceptable behaviour.

Where is our moral compass? When a Christian cross can become a serious issue; when the use of the word ‘Allah’ is contentious; when rock concerts are deemed as corrupting young minds — how do we explain leaders like these?

Is this then our trademark culture?

If so, then let us relish such crass public deliveries. Let our schools teach this as a skill to be cherished.

If we truly believe in our maruah and uphold a life that is centred on the Holy Books of each believing community, on common sense and dignity, then we are duty-bound to take offence at Zahid’s and Shahrizat’s off-colour exchange.
