SHAH ALAM: The cross is a sacred symbol to Christians and as such the one at the Taman Medan church that was forced to be pulled down, should be put back up again, the Selangor Menteri Besar said.

Speaking to reporters at the state secretariat building in Shah Alam today, Azmin Ali said, “Yes, it is not a problem. In fact, the question is, why was the church forced to remove it?

“This is because the cross is a sacred symbol to the Christian community and society has to respect that.”

He was responding to questions regarding the incident last Sunday when 50 protestors stood outside a church in Taman Medan interrupting their Sunday service and then demanding the pastor bring down the cross displayed outside.

Azmin also said the protestors should be brought to book as their actions were unacceptable and citizens of different faiths must respect each other, The Malaysian Insider said.

Among the protestors, was the elder brother of the Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.

While the IGP has brushed aside the protest, saying there was nothing criminal or seditious about it, the prime minister called for a police probe. The IGP’s elder brother was interrogated by police for three hours yesterday.
