In line with Jakim demands, A&W Malaysia also does not allow customers to bring in cakes which are not halal-certified.
A&W has told FMT that in complying with halal standards of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), even employees are not allowed to bring in outside food they may have bought for their own meals. Anyway, staff are provided with meals.
A&W Malaysia vice-president and CEO Samad Mohd Shariff said customers who wanted to celebrate a birthday party at A&W would be told the terms and conditions for having a party at any A&W outlet.
“We do not sell or prepare birthday cakes for birthday parties. However, we will advise customers to purchase their cake from stores which have a halal certification from Jakim.
Samad said that aside from halal-certified birthday cakes, A&W did not allow any outside food in its outlets.

Last October, A&W revealed it had changed the name of two of its food items, Coney Dog and it’s non-alcoholic Root Beer, in line with Jakim’s standards, which says words like “dog” and “beer” cannot be used for food in halal-certified outlets.
Meanwhile, KFC Malaysia told FMT that it has a strict “no outside food” policy, and this includes birthday cakes to be brought in from outside.
“However, we do have a party team for children’s birthdays that can provide cakes if requested.”
KFC Malaysia is part of the KFC brand owned by United States-based Yum! Brands Inc, the world’s largest restaurant company in terms of outlets. Yum! also owns Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.
